Hope you are doing great.........We were in the environmental chemistry lab and we carried out the TSS and TDS test for water using the conventional methods by filtering and heating, but what happened was strange! the weight of the conical flask after evaporizing the water is less than it was before the experiment, and the same story for the filter paper after drying it in the oven. So what may be the mistakes that we committed? ................ Thank you in advance

Solution

There are two possible reasons

1. Empty conical flask and filter paper weights may be not down without drying them, if water content is higher in empty conical flask and filter paper than the TDS and TSS then weight after evoparating will be less than the empty weights.

2. Inaccurate weighing balance may be used, for TDS and TSS measurements +1/-0.1mg accurate weighing balance needed.
