Interpretation:
In a random sample of 50 student from a large university, all the students were between 18 and 20 years old. Can we conclude that the entire population of students at the university is between 18 and 20 years old? Explain.
Please show your work thank you.
Solution
NO.
There are various methods to show that not all students (p = 1) are between 18 and 20. Admittedly, the populagtion proportion p could be very close to 1, but it is not automatically 1, even though we have this result.
One of such methods is using the \"plus four method\", which adds 4 samples, with only 2 of which satisfying the condition.
Hence, instead of p = 50/50 = 1, then we have p = (50+2)/(50+4) = 0.962962963.
We do this because it\'s just so hard for statistics to be \"so sure\". Hence, we usually avoid probabilities equal to 1, especially in experiments.
