Csikszentmihalyi describes some forms of entertainment as keeping us from creativity (bottom of p 348, Csikszentmihalyi, Mihaly. Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention. New York: Harper Collins, 1996, pages 343-372 ). What is his argument? Do you agree?

Solution

What is his argument?

Csikszentmihalyi argues that all forms of entertainment from books to newspaper to multimedia outlets , have a sort of distraction on our minds which does not allow us to devote enough time and energy to think and process apon the creative aspects of nature and those present in our lives. We tend to focus on such things unless an external force \"forces\" us to think about something constructive.

Do you agree?

I agree with his views on entertainemnt inhibiting creativity. This is almost a common thing with each of us where we find ourselves being sucked into TV and the content they offer. We without realization pigeon hole ourselves into thinking only exclusively , what is being shown or presented , instead of opening our minds to the vast possiblities and circumstances. Although, these forms of entertainment can also encourage creativity if we find the right balance of taking in the content presented and think and explore on the possibilities and think of new ways to make it better or to accomplish that task faster and not fall in the trap of thinking that what is shown must be the be all and end all, which restricts our creativity as mentioned by Csikszentmihalyi.
