Describe how saline implants are sterilized, including the saline liquid (2pts). Describe how silicone implants are sterilized (2pts). Describe the differences (2pts) and similarities (2pts) between these sterilization procedures
Solution
1.Saline implant consists of silicone rubber shell filled with sterile saline ,but while implantation silicone shell is empty and is filled with sterile saline after insertion of silicone shell into the human body.
During sterilization of saline implants , both the silicone shell and saline are sterilized separately.sterilization of silicone cover can be done using dry heat, steam autoclaving, ethylene oxide (EtO), gamma radiation, and electron beam (e-beam) radiation. In general, the effects of sterilization on silicones can be useful in determining the optimal method, but other factors such as device design, throughput, and sterilization efficacy are factors that must be considered when making a decision regarding the sterilization technique., they are typically not affected by most sterilization methods.
Saline can be sterilized by autoclaving.
2.silicone implants are completely made of silicone filled with silicone gel. The same sterilization techniques can be used as above used for silicone bag of saline implants.
If they are heat sensitive than low pressure plasma tecnique or gamma irradiation can be used.
3.Differences in sterilization tecniques of saline implant and silicone implant occur where silicon shell and saline are sterilized separately and the inflation is done only after the silicone she is inserted in the body, where as in silicone implants the shell is first inflated with silicone gel and the sterilization is carried out after which can be utilized for implant as a whole.
Similarities in both the cases are the sterilization methods which are followed in cases are same in case of silicone shell and also both are packed in sterile condition after sterilization till they are used.
