Calculate the binding energy per nucleon for 14N 11B 197Au a
Calculate the binding energy per nucleon for 14N, 11B, 197Au, and 209Bi. (For the atomic masses, see this table. Enter your answers to at least two decimal places.)
(a) 14N
MeV/nucleon
(b) 11B
MeV/nucleon
(c) 197Au
MeV/nucleon
(d) 209Bi
MeV/nucleon
Solution
a) We know that the binding energy for Nitrogen is 104 MeV and the number of nucleons in nitrogen is 14,
Hence the binding energy per nucleon will be = Binding energy/number of nucleones = 104/14 = 7.6 MeV
b) We know that the binding energy for B is 75 MeV and the number of nucleons in nitrogen is 11,
Hence the binding energy per nucleon will be = Binding energy/number of nucleones = 75/11 = 7 MeV
C) We know that the binding energy for Au is 1937 MeV and the number of nucleons in nitrogen is 197,
Hence the binding energy per nucleon will be = Binding energy/number of nucleones = 104/197 = 9.8 MeV
