Botulism bacteria produce toxins that are lethal if a sufficient amount is ingested. However, some cosmetic physicians have found it useful in removing wrinkles, since it causes permanent muscle relaxation when applied to small areas of wrinkles. Knowing that acetylcholine is necessary for muscle contraction, how do you suppose small amounts of botulism toxin works to remove these wrinkles?

Solution

Botulinium toxin released from bacterium botulism, binds to high affinity recognition sites pre synaptically on the cholinergic nerve terminals. This way they decrease the release of acetyl choline and cause a neuromuscular blocking effect. Now as the neurotransmitter cannot be released, muscle contraction cannot be stimulated and muscle gets relaxed . So this mechanism can be used, at the place of wrinkled, so that muscle fails to contract and wrinkles disappear.
