QUESTION 3 Consider the following reaction at equilibrium. What effect will adding 1 mole of Ar to the reaction mixture have on the system? 2 H2S(g)+3 02(g)2 H20(g)+ 2 SO2(g) O No effect will be observed O The reaction will shift to the right in the direction of products The reaction will shift to the left in the direction of reactants. The equilibrium constant will decrease. O The equilibrium constant will increase.

Solution

Ans: No effect will be observed.

Acoording to Le Chatelier\'s principle, the system at equilibrium when disturbed will act in the opposite direction of the disturbance to re-establish the equilibrium.

Adding an inert gas like Ar does not effect the equilibrium as it won\'t react with reactants/ products. Even though the total pressure of the system changes but the partial pressures of reactants and products remain unchanged. Hence no change will be observed.
