1. Consider these two word problems for 14 divided by 3.
A baking problem: A batch of cookies requires 3 cups of flour. How many batches of cookies can you make if you have 14 cups of flour (and all the other ingredients you need?)
A brownie problem: You have 14 problems which you will divide equally among 3 bags. How many brownies should you put in each bag?
Now in the table below, write your interpretation of the whole number quotient 4, remainder 2, and the mixed number quotient 4 2/3 (fraction form) ifor both problems. In each case what does the 4 stand for? What does the 2? The 2/3 fraction?
Solution
a)
a batch of cookies required 3 cups of floor
14 =4*3 +2
4 batches of cookies are possible from 14 cups of flour,2 cups of flour remaining
b)14 =4*3+2
4 problems in each bag and 2 brownie will be remaining
