Discussion 1: Elevator Pitch
The purpose of this discussion is to analyze personal, professional, job-seeking, job-keeping, and interview skills.
An elevator pitch is a clear, brief message or “commercial” about you. It communicates who you are, what you\'re looking for and how you can benefit a company or organization. It\'s typically about 30 seconds, the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator.
Step 1: Watch the Elevator Pitch video
Step 2: Review the Discussion Board Rubric
Step 3: Take a moment to reflect on your dream job after graduation. Consider the kind of qualifications and professional skills an ideal candidate for your dream job would need to have. Check the My Ideal Business Card activity if you need help organizing your ideas.
Compose a thoughtful summary response to the following points as your main discussion post:
Share your elevator pitch for your dream job given your current qualifications.
Share your elevator pitch for your dream job presuming your anticipated qualifications after graduation.
If you were the hiring manager which version of you would get the job? Why?
Step 4: Respond to at least 2 of your peers’ posts with thoughtful, substantive comments that continue the conversation.
Solution
To begin with, an elevator pitch, originated by IIene Rosenzweig and Michael Caruso, is a brief summary reflecting your dreams, goals, view points and desires from your future job. It is an easy and quick way to share your experiences and expertise with the people who are not aware of you and is a way to get into a new job. An elevator pitch should be brief, to the point, persuasive and flexible.
As far as my dream job is concerned it is dealing in sales, work as a real estate agent by selling homes to people around. For someone holding a master degree in marketing, entering into the field of sales would be one of the dream jobs ever. Selling anything is a task and requires lots of hard work and dedication. Selling out homes/ flats to individuals after their retirement age is what I define as my dream job. The qualifications and skills to be present in an ideal candidate for my dream job are as follows:
A perfect example of an elevator pitch for my dream job would be as follows:
Hi! I am a college graduate and hold degree in marketing. I am also working as an independent real estate agent and specialize in providing with luxurious, spacious, comfortable homes in and around your desired location. I help provide my clients (near retirement age) with perfect homes fit for relaxing and easing out on life and lay back and think on their achievements in life. I help my clients find a home away from home and if they are in search for their dream house, I make sure I help them find one. If you think I am fit and capable to work as a real estate agent with your company, I would love to have a word with you and speak on it in more depth.
Further, to build an elevator pitch after presuming my anticipated qualifications after graduation, anticipation of qualification is must. Presuming to be a graduate from college, holding a communication degree and seeking job in one of the top leading news channel in the town, the elevator pitch for this dream job would be as follows:
Hi! I recently graduated from college and hold a communication degree. As a student I worked with the college newspaper, holding the position of a reporter and also worked as an editor in college magazine. I am looking for a job where I can get an opportunity to work as a journalist.
Keeping in mind the above two elevator pitch, if I were the hiring manager, I would select the first version on myself for the job. The reason being that the first pitch was precise, clear in terms of what I want and how I help my clients find their dream homes presently and also it was complete in its own way. It included all the points for a good elevator pitch it was precise, clear, strong, delivering necessary message and proper closing.
On the other hand the second pitch was short but was not clearly defined and was not able to define what skills I possessed and how it can help me do my job. Above all it was not closed properly and did not define what is desired from the job.
