Define and give an example of osmosis in a plant cell. What is the driving force for osmosis?
Solution
Osmosis is the process by which molecules of solvent pass through a semi permeable membrane from a solutiom of less concentration to high concentration.
Osmosis in plant is a key factor in photosynthesis. The guard cells surrounding stomata in leaf, swell due to osmosis, which opens the stomata and carbon dioxide enters in. Even the roots of plants carry on osmosis to transport water and minerals up to xylem.
The driving force is the osmotic pressure gradient which draws the solvent from high concentration of water to low concentration.
