Mrs. Jackson wants to lay tile in the area in front of her fireplace, as shown in the diagram. The tile costs $2.99 per square foot. About how much will it cost Mrs. Jackson to tile the area?

Solution

We know that the area of a trapezium ( a quadrilateral with 2 parallel sides) is h/2(a+b), wher a and b are the two parallel sides and h is the perpendicular distane between these two sides. Here, the area of the given trapezium is 3/2(6+11) = 51/2 sq. ft. Since the tiles cost $ 2.99 per square foot, the cost of laying the tiles to Mr. Jacson will be $ 2.99*21/2 = $ 76.245 or $ 76.25 ( on rounding off to the nearest cent).
