1. A healthy person inhales by lowering the diaphragm and expanding the chest wall outwards.

2. This increases the size of the chest cavity-like pulling the plunger back on a hypodermic needle.

3.As a result the pressure in the chest cavity decreases.

4. And air flows in through the trachea inflating the lungs.
