6. Consider the following reactions. Does the number of moles of products increase, decrease or stays the same when the temperature is increased? How does the new equilibrium constant compare with the original one? (a) 4 NH3 (g) + 5 O2 (g) > 4 NO (g) + 6 H2O (g) r =-902.2 kJ (b) N2 (g) + O2 (g) 2 NO (g) r = 182.6 kJ (c) 2 A (g) A2 (g) r = 0.01 kJ

Solution

a) 4NH3 + 5o2 = 4No2 +6H2O

this reaction is exothermic in nature.hence ,the equilibrium constant will decrease with increase in temperature.

The number ofoles in either side of reaction is equal . therefore there will be no effect of temperature on the number of moles.it will be remains unchanged

b) N2 + O2 = 2NO

This is ostwald reaction and it is highly exothermic . therefore equilibrium constant will decrease with increase in temperature.that is it will goes in backward direction.

Here reaction is balanced.therfore number of moles will remain unchanged because there is no effect of temperature on number of moles if reaction is already balanced

C)2A=A2

Generally bond formations are exothermic.do we can say that equilibrium will decrease with increase with temperature.

The number of moles will remain unchanged.since this is a balanced reaction
