e. Suppose that there was electric field at an angle away from the surface of a piece of m of metal, as in the picture below. I. Would there be an electric field parallel to the surface of the metal? II. Would there be an electric field perpendicular to the surface of the metal? If there were an electric field parallel to the surface of the metal, would charges on the surface of the metal move due to that component of the field? III. 18

Solution

e

I) Yes there would be electric field parallel to the surface of metal.

ii)Yes there would be electric field perpendicular to the surface of metal.

iii)Yes charges would move due to the parallel component of electric field in a way to distribute the charges and cancel the parallel component of electric field.

iv)The perpendicular component of field would cause the polarization in metal that is positive charges on one side and negative charges on the other. Positive chrages would move in the direction of field and negative charges would move opposite to the direction of field .Thus we have pile up of positive chrages on one side and negative charges on one side. There will be this movement till the field due to induced charges balances the external field.

 e. Suppose that there was electric field at an angle away from the surface of a piece of m of metal, as in the picture below. I. Would there be an electric fie
