A point on the edge of a flywheel with a radius of 16 cm is rotating at a rate of 8 radians per second What is the linear speed of a point on its rim, in centimeters per minute? The linear speed is approximately cm/min. (Round to the nearest integer as needed)

Solution

The linear speed, v, is:

v = r

where = the angular speed

= 8 radians per second, and

r = the radius = 16 cm.

Hence:

v = (8 radians per sec.)*(16 cm) = 128 cm/sec

There are 60 second per minute, so:

v = (128 cm/sec)*(60 sec/min) = 7680 cm/min
