I cannot figure out this question. Please Help.

It says:

Write v as a linear combination of u and w, if possible, where u = (1, 2) and

w = (1, ?3). (Enter your answer in terms of u and w. If not possible, enter IMPOSSIBLE.)

v = (2, ?1)

Write v as a linear combination of u and w, if possible, where u = (1, 2) and w = (1, -3). (Enter your answer in terms of u and w. If not possible, enter IMPOSSIBLE.) v = (2, -1) v = 1.4 middot u + 0.60 middot w

Solution

u+w=(1,2)+(1,-3)=(2,-1)=v

So,

v=u+w

Not sure how you got that answer.

1.4u+0.6w=1.4(1,2)+0.6(1,-3)=(1.4+0.6,2.8-1.8)=(2,1) But, v=(2,-1)
