Tracking and communications are the two pivotal changes technology has brought to the motor carrier industry. Norton Trucking is a Santa Fe based motor carrier company and it is in business since 1970’s as it is a family owned business similar traditions has been carried forward from one generation to the next but in the recent years the company has faced competition from newer age trucking companies who are taking away some of the high value accounts from the company. The management zeroed in, one the reasons with the help of customer reviews and found out that customers now want complete tracking report of the cargo which makes them comfortable and is also been in practice from some other trucking companies from whom they have lost some of the businesses to.
The management decided to incorporate a tracking software with the help of GPS positioning, with this real time locations can be relayed to the company and its customers and is also encrypted through a password so that only essential personnel’s from the client’s organization know where the truck is at and now they have also introduced a real time information relay messaging system to the driver, notifying him about traffic and weather changes so that with time in hand the driver can take the best possible route to deliver the cargo. The use of technology made Norton trucking won back some of the lost businesses.
The challenges were not larger as situation based simulation and training were given to all the drivers within the company, informing them the uses, features and performance knowledge of the system. Some of the drivers raised the concerns as they felt they are losing their privacy when performing the duties but when it was made understood that this technology also has their safety and security in mind then the drivers agreed to roll on with the new development.
