Calculate the work in J done on the system for the follwing

Calculate the work (in J) done on the system for the follwing example. Specify the sign of the work.

The volume of an ideal gas changes from 1.00L to 3.00L at an inital temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and a constant pressure of 1 bar.

Solution

Work done at isobaric process (pressure = constant) W= pdV

dV= final volume – initial volume = (3-1)L=2 L = 2×10-3 m3

Pressure p=1 bar = 105 Pa

So, W = 2×10-3×105 = 200 J

W >0

So, during isobaric expansion the gas does positive work.
