Write the Net Ionic Equation and determine the standard pote
Write the Net Ionic Equation and determine the standard potential for the reaction between permanganate and tin(II). From the potential, calculate the free energy of the reaction.
Solution
permanganate and tin(II).---------> Sn(MnO4)2
Permanganate is a strong oxidixer, so Sn+2 will probably be oxidized to Sn+4 and Mn+7 to Mn+2 in acidic solution:
Sn+2 + MnO4- + H+ --> Sn+4 + Mn+2 + H2O
The net equation is
MnO4- + Sn2+ = Mn2+ + Sn4+
MnO4- + 8 H+ + 5e- = Mn2+ + 4 H2O
Sn2+ = Sn4+ + 2e-
2 MnO4- + 16 H+ + 5 Sn2+ = 2 Mn2+ + 5 Sn4+ + 8 H2O
