For the circuit shown in the figure below, calculate the power associated with each element Establish if the power is being absorbed or deliver by the element.

Solution

Applying KVL in left side loop:

12- (1)(4) - (4)(I1) = 0

I1 = 2 A

Applying KVL in middle loop:

1 + (2)(4) - (6)(I2) = 0

I2 = 1.5 A


KCL at junction,

4 - I3 - I1 - I2 = 0

4 - I3 - 2 - 1.5 = 0

I3 = 0.5 A


I4 = I2 + I3 = 1.5 + 0.5 = 2 A

through 12 V:

delivered , P = 12 x 4 = 48 Watt


through 1 ohm,

absorbed, P = 4^2 x 1 = 16 W


throgh 4 ohm,

absorbed, P = 2^2 x 4 = 16 W


through 1V :

delivered, P = 2 W


through 6 ohm:

absorbed, P = 1.5^2 x 6 = 13.5 W


through 8 ohm:

absorbed, P = 0.5^2 x 8 = 2 W


through 5 V :

absorbed , P = 5 x 0.5 = 2.5 W
