Question 4:
The textbook discusses 2 different 2-dimensional NMR experiments and an unusual 13C experiment. Name one of these experiments, and cite the type of information this experiment can give you. (You can find additional information on your experiment of choice through internet resources).
Solution
The two different type of two dimensional NMR is COSY and NOESY which are the abbreviations of Correlation Spectroscopy and Nuclear overhauser effect spectroscopy respectively. COSY NMR spectroscopy tells about the abnormal coupling existed in the molecule which is unexpected by seeing the molecule. It is very useful when the coupling of multiplets make the One dimensional NMR complicated. by doing such type of experiment we can get more prominent results will be obtained which helps to find out the exact structure of the compound with the coupling pattern. We may get information about the position and coupling of the different sites of protons available in the molecule of interest.
The unusual 13C experiment may the DEPT 13C experiment which commonly people were not doing to find the information about the number and types of carbons. In DEPT 13C experiment one can get the information about the different type of carbon atoms (primary, secondary, tertiary and quarternary carbons). The CH2 carbon will go down in the spectrum while rest will come on top side of spectrucm. Quartenary carbons will not display in the spectrum.
