Pre-Laboratory Assignment 1. What are the hazards associated witlh (a) sodium methoxide? (b) methanol? 2. How d sample? oes one obtain an appropriate mixture of methanol and water for recrystallizing a solid 3. Explain how mixture melting points can be used to distinguish between two compounds with similar melting points. Use additional information sources, if necessary 4. How does the intermediate produced in nucleophilic aromatic substitution differ from the produced in electrophilic aromatic substitution? How are the two intermediates similar? Briefly explain.

  Solution
Ans 1 :
There are many hazards associated with the chemical substances.
a) Sodium methoxide :
It is a strong base and highly flammable chemical substance , so it can cause redness , serious skin burns when contacted with the skin.
If ingested it can cause sore throats , burning sensation in throat and chest or even worse shock and collapse.
b) Methanol
methanol is also a flammable chemical. Its vapor and air mixtures are very explosive . It causes cough , headache , dizziness , weakness , nausea etc.
