A direct-mapped cache design with a 32-bit address has the following address fields: a 5-bit byte-offset field, a 5-bit index field, and a 22-bit tag field. a. Indicate the size of each block frame in words. b. Indicate the number of block frames in the cache.

Solution

a) Block size is 2(Power N) Bytes where N is the number of offset bit.

Block Size = 2(Power 5) = 32 Bytes = 8 Words. (As each word contain 4 bytes)

b) As index has 5 bits so number of block frames in the cache is 2 (power M )

where M is number of bit used by index field which is 5 in our case.

So, Number of block frames = 2 (Power 5) = 32.
