We now come to an interesting experiment conducted by P.C.Wason on understanding. (A lot of people get this wrong.) Suppose that students were told that each card has one side that contains a letter and the other side contains a number. The students might be shown the cards: The task was to decide whether the rule \'If a card has a vowel on one side, then it has an even number on the other side\' was true or not. The students had to turn over only the cards which had to be turned over to judge the correctness of the rule. Which cards in the above example would you turn over and which would you not? Justify you answers.

Solution

Given rule is \" If a card has a vowel on one side, then it has an even number on the other side\"

the cards are given as A J 3 8

from given cards , on left side end card has voweland other end card is even number . we need to turn over and check these two only. And remaining two cards J, 3 are consonant and odd number respectively, so we do not need to turn these cards and check.

case 1: turn over the card which has alphabet A which is vowel and check for even number. If it is even number, rule holds for this card.

case 2: turn over the card which has even number 8 and check for alphabet which is vowel(A,E, I, O, U)  . If it is vowel, then rule holds for this card also.

then we can conclude that the given rule is true.
