Role of internal body Cavities:
Cushion and protect the internal organs.
Being flexible for the heart, lungs, digestive organs, and reproductive organs to expand.
Allow organs to change shape and size.
Helps to transport waste, nutrients and gases between several different body parts and organs.
Maintain pressure inside of the body.
Allow for the separation and compartmentalization of different biological functions in the body.
The coelom prevent injury to the digestive organs.
Internal body cavities other than Gut (Abdominal cavity) are:
Cranial cavity: This cavity is located in the head superior the medial, and is surrounded by the skull. It also contains the pituitary and endocrine glands.
Thoracic cavity (Pleural, Supra mediastinum, pericardial cavity): this cavity is located in the anterior portion of the body and the mediastinum. It contains the cavity that surrounds the breast bone and ribs. Containing the lungs, heart, trachea, larynx and bronchial tubes.
Pelvic cavity: This is located below the abdominal cavity, which is inferior of the transverse plane. It contains the urinary bladder, ureters, urethra, rectum and anus, and the uterus in females.
Spinal cavity: This is the space that surrounds the spinal column or backbones. This is located in the posterior section of the body. It contains the spinal cord, the spinal column (consists of vertebra). The tissue in between are called disc, made up of cartilage.
