A basketball has a mass of approximately 624 grams and a volume of 0.25 cubic feet. Determine the density of the basketball in units of batman per hogshead. A cube of material X, 1 inch on all sides, has a mass of 0.05 kilograms. Determine the specific gravity of material X.

Solution

1 batman=3kg

1 hogshead=63 gallons

first obtaing density in si unit i.e kg/m3

kg=624/1000;

using 1 m3=35.3 feet3

and it is given 0.25 cubic feet

so 35.3*0.25 m3

=12.355 m3

d=0.624/12.355

d=0.0505kg/m3

1 kg=1/3 batman

1m3=264.172 gallons

d=0.505/(3*264.172)

d=6.37*10^-4 ans

8)

1 inch=2.54 cm

so volume is=2.54^3=16.38 cm3

convert into litre

1 cm3=1miliLitre

so 16.38 mililitre

so density of object=624gram/16.38 ml

density of object=38.09gm/ml

density of water=1 gm/ml

so specific gravity=density of object/density of water

38.09/1=38.09 ans
