1. What are the stages of responsiveness to issues of sustainability suggested by Simon Zadek? Briefly describe each.
Solution
There are generally 5 stages :
1. Defensive stage : Compnies in certain cases do not care about the impact of thier products . They are mostly in a denial stage with respect to the critisicm recieved from thier stakeholders such as customer ,employees and shareholders. A classic example of such a case was shell\'s involvement n the carbon emissons where they maintained thier stand for a long period of time
2. Compliance stage : This is to define and stick to a policy that is agreed and visible to critics. Compliance to the laws set up by companies is seen as cost of doing business to the companies . This is to simply adhere to compliance and not look at a further commitment or involevment on any particular matter or domain within thier industry
3.Managerial stage : The managers of the core businesses are sligned in such companies to consider the impact of thier key processes on agreed upn laws such as labor laws etc . The managers of these companies model thier sales forecasting , incentive planning etc in such a way that they are compliant to the laws that are to be complied with in s respective domain
4. Strategic stage : In the strategic stage companies realign thier startegies to use responsible business practices as a competitive advantage . They realise that it will not be possible to outrun competition and sustain in the respective industry if they do not educate and drive the customers towards the a stage which is most beneficial for the consumer
5.Civil Stage : In this stage companies realise and promote the entire sector towards a stage that ensures that the consumers inetersts are best addressed . For example there are alcohol companies that drive awareness on responsible drinking . in summary they these compnies think about future of the role of business in society and how to bring about true value to the society by driving the entire sector towards a stage of consumer betterment
