Determine the power supplied to the 6.0 ? resistor in the circuit shown in the drawing. (R1 = 3.0 ?, R2 = 6.0 ? and V1 = 14 V.)

Solution

total resistance:

R\' = R1 + (1/(2+1) + 1/(1+R2))^-1

R\' = 3 + (1/(2+1) + 1/(1+6))^-1

R\' = 5.1 ohms

current:

i = V1/R\' = 14/5.1 = 2.745 A

Voltage:

V = V1 - i R1 = 14 - (2.745)*(3) = 5.765 V

the current through the R2:

i2 = V/(1 + 6) = (5.765)/(7) = 0.82357 A

The power:

P2 = R2 i2^2 = (6) * (0.82357)^2 = 4.1 W
