A 1,000. kg surveillance satellite is separated from its 700. kg booster rocket by explosive bolts. If the explosion has an impulse of 400. kg•m/s, what is the relative speed at which the satellite and booster separate?

let the relative speed is v

speed of satellite is v1

speed if rocket is v2

For satellite ,

1000 * v1 = 400

v1 = 0.4 m/s

for the booster

700 * v2 = 400

v2 = 0.57 m/s

Now , relative speed of satellite with booster = v1 + v2

relative speed of satellite with booster = 0.57 + 0.4

relative speed of satellite with booster = 0.97 m/s

the relative speed of satellite with booster is 0.97 m/s
