Two identical compartments contain an equal mass of the same ideal gas. The temperature of the hot gas is 67oC while the temperature of the cold gas is 27oC. Three Joules (3J) of heat transferred through the partition which separates the gases without significantly affecting the temperature of either gas. Determine the
a) entropy change of each gas and
b) entropy change of the universe

Two identical compartments contain an equal mass of the same ideal gas. The temperature of the hot gas is 67oC while the temperature of the cold gas is 27oC. Three Joules (3J) of heat transferred through the partition which separates the gases without significantly affecting the temperature of either gas. Determine the
a) entropy change of each gas and
b) entropy change of the universe
Solution
a) change in entropy , delta S = Q/T
=> entropy change of hot gas = - (3 J)/(273 + 67 K)
= - 8.823 * 10-3 J/K
=> entropy change of cold gas = (3 J)/(273 + 27 K)
= 0.01 J/K
b) entropy change of the universe = 0.01 - 8.823 * 10-3
= 1.177 * 10-3 J/K
