A charge –q is placed at one corner of a square of side s, and charges + q are placed at each of the other corners.

a. What is the potential formula solution at the center of the square?

b. What is the value of the potential if the magnitude of q= 8.15 C and the value of side s= 34 cm? Show units in the calculated answer for full credit.

Solution

k =9*10^9 N.m^2/C^2

a) Electric potential V = kq/r

r = ((s/2)^2+(s/2)^2)^1/2 = 0.707 s

electric potential is scalar quantity

V =V1+V2+V3+V4

V = -kq/r +3kq/r = 2kq/r =2kq/0.707s

V = 2.83 (kq/s)

b) q =8.15 uC, s =34 cm

V = (2.83*9*10^9*8.15*10^-6)/(0.34)

V =6.11*10^5 V
