In the circuit shown in Figure 1 E 760 V R1 400 R2 600

In the circuit shown in (Figure 1) , E = 76.0 V , R_1 = 4.00 , R_2 = 6.00 and R_3 = 3.00 .

(A) What is the potential difference V_ab between points a and b when the switch S is open?

(B) What is the potential difference V_ab between points a and b when the switch S is closed?

(C) For the 4.00 resistor, calculate the current through the resistor with S open.

(D) For the 4.00 resistor, calculate the current through the resistor with S closed.

(E) For the 6.00 resistor, calculate the current through the resistor with S open.

(F) For the 6.00 resistor, calculate the current through the resistor with S closed.

(G) For the 3.00 resistor, calculate the current through the resistor with S open.

(H) For the 3.00 resistor, calculate the current through the resistor with S closed.

(I) For each resistor (R_1, R_2, R_3), does the current increase or decrease when S is closed?

This problem has far too many parts, so if you\'d prefer to show me how to do one of each type I should be able to figure the rest out. Thank you!

Solution

a) r2 and r3 in series

Vab = 6*(76/9)=50.667 v

b)(r1 and r2 parallel ) and series with r3

Vab = 76 - [3*(76/5.4)] = 33.7 v

c) current = 0

d) 33.7/4 = 8.425 amp

e)76/9 = 8.44 amp

f)33.7/5.61667 amp

g)8.44 amp

h)14.07 amp

i)r1 increased when s closed

r2 decreased when s closed

r3 increased when s closed
