3.) (15 points) a.) For the following three light bulbs for use in your home, find the current and resistance of each bulb b.) Calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) of each bulb assuming that you pay $0.15/kWh. TCO is how much money you spend to buy and use the light bulb for its expected life c.) Calculate how much money you would spend on lighting your home using the three bulbs. How can you compare these three technologies? What light bulb would you recommend using and why? Incandescent CFL LED Power 100W 25W 22W Life (hours) 1500 3500 Cost $0.85 $1.55 $11.99

Solution

(b) For incandescent bulb

TCO = cost of the bulb + cost of using the bulb during its lifetime

TCO = $0.85 + (100/1000 kW * 1500 hours * $0.15/kWh)

TCO = $23.25

For CFL bulb

TCO = cost of the bulb + cost of using the bulb during its lifetime

TCO = $1.55 + (25/1000 kW * 3500 hours * $0.15/kWh)

TCO = $14.675

For LED bulb

TCO = cost of the bulb + cost of using the bulb during its lifetime

TCO = $11.99 + (22/1000 kW * 50000 hours * $0.15/kWh)

TCO = $176.99

(c) Total money spent on lighting the home using given three bulbs (M)= sum of TCO\'s of all three bulbs

M = $23.25 + $14.675 + $176.99

M = $214.915

The three technologies can be compared on the basis of the power they consume and the life time they burn for. The bulb burning for more time and on lesser power is more efficient. So, if we look at the given data for three bulbs, we can see that LED consumes minimum power of all yet burns for the longest lifetime. So, I would recommend using LED.
