Some planetary scientists have suggested that the planet Mars has an electric field somewhat similar to that of the earth, producing a net electric flux of 3.61×1016 Nm2/C into the planet\'s surface. Find the direction of the electric field at the planet\'s surface. Find the direction of the electric field at the planet\'s surface. It points toward the center of Mars. It points away from the center of Mars. Calculate the charge density on Mars, assuming all the charge is uniformly distributed over the planet\'s surface.

Solution

a)
since flux is going in,
Electric field must be going in towards the centre
Answer:
It points toward the center of Mars

b)
use:
flux = Qenc/ ensoleneo
- 3.61*10^16 = Qenc / (8.854*10^-12)
Qenc = - 3.196*10^5 C
Radius of mars = 3.390*10^6 m
A = 4*pi*r^2
    = 4*pi*(3.390*10^3)^2
    = 1.444*10^8 m^2

Charge density = Q/A
                                 = ( - 3.196*10^5 ) / (1.444*10^8)
                                 = -2.213*10^-3 C/m^2
