A pilot, whose mass is 91.0 kg, makes a loop-the-loop in a fast jet. Assume that the jet maintains a constant speed of 345 m/s and that the radius of the loop-the-loop is 4.247 km. What is the apparent weight that the pilot feels (i.e., the force with which the pilot presses against the seat) at the TOP of the loop-the-loop?

Solution

at the top of a loop-the-loop

acceleration = g - ac

W + m*(g - ac) = 0

ac = v^2/r

W + mg = mv^2/r

W = mv^2/r - mg

W = 91*345^2/4247 - 91*9.81

W = 1657.62 N
