II0 explN What is this relationship called What do each of

. I/I0 = exp(-lN). What is this relationship called. What do each of the terms represent. How much light is transmitted by a 10 meter column of ozone at 30km at the following wavelengths a) 250 nm and b) 290 nm. Assume the pressure is 10mbar, T=240K, O3 is 6 ppm. You need to calculate [O3] then get the absorption cross sections from the appended slides. Be sure to clearly indicate the values you use at each wavelength.

Solution

This relationship is called Beer\'s Lambert Law

Transmittance is I/I0= e-lN. I0 and I are the intensity (or power) of the incident light and the transmitted light,

l is the length of solution, n is concentration of solution and sigma is a constant.

To calculate this , we need the value of absorption coeffcient.

The method for solving this will be:

First calculate the moles of O3 from parts per million. From ideal gas equation PV = nRT, calculate the volume of

O3 . Then, calculate the concentrtion of O3. Now, we just need to put the values in the formula and get trnsmittance.
