A block of wood weighs 50.0 N when weighed in air. A sinker isattached to the block, and the weight of the wood-sinkercombination is 210 N when the sinkeralone is immersed in water. Finally, the wood-sinker combination iscompletely immersed and the weight is 150 N. Find the density of the block.

Solution

when the sinker alone immersed in water weight of thesinker
      W\' = (W- Vg) + 50.0N = 210N
      =(mg- Vg) + 50.0N = 210N .
         = (mg - Vg) +50.0N = 210N .....................eq1

      = water density .
   V = volume of sinker.
   g = accleration due togravity.
   W = actual weight of thesinker
   m = mass of thesinker
from the above equation we can solve for the volume ofthe , and hence the mass of the person .
  if both the block and the person are inwater
      W\'\' = (W -Vg) + (50.0N-V\'g) = 150 N .
      = W -V\'g+(50.0N -V\'\'g) = 150N ...............eq2
          = water density .
   using the above two equaion we can sovle for thedensity of the block after finding the volume V\'\'.
