Let\'s say that you wish to make taller humans, and have infinite monetary resources. Should you start with (a) a small population of relatively tall individuals and continuously select for taller ones in each generation, or (b) a larger population of average individuals, and continuously select for taller ones in each generation? What does your answer depend on?
Solution
My option would be B.
When you select for the tall trait in a larger population , this helps you to gradually select for tall people in the whole population. Tall people can mate with average people and produce tall people. Thus in a few years, all the people in the larger population will be tall.
If you select a small population of relatively tall individuals and select for the tallest, only that small population will have tall people. In this population tall people will mate with tall people to give tall offspring. There is no change in the height of the average population. Only this small group of people will be tall.
