Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid CHCOOH MM 6005 gmol di

Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid. CHCOOH (MM = 60.05 g/mol), dissolved in water. A 5.54-g sample of vinegar was neutralized by 15.10 mL. of0.100 M Ba(OH). What is the percent by weight of acetic acid in the vinegar?

Solution

number of mole of Ba(OH)2 = (molarity)*(volume of solution in L)
= 0.100*0.01510
= (1.51*10^-3) mole

use,
2*(number of mole of CH3COOH) = (number of mole of Ba(OH)2)
2*(number of mole of CH3COOH) = 1.51*10^-3
number of mole of CH3COOH = 7.55*10^-4 mole
(given mass of CH3COOH)/(molar mass of CH3COOH) = 7.55*10^-4
w/60.05 = 7.55*10^-4
w = 0.0453 g

% CH3COOH = {(mass of CH3COOH)/(mass of vinegar)}*100
= (0.0453/5.45)*100
= 0.831 %

Answer : 0.831 %
