A mechanical engineer wants to make a shaft turn CW by welding a 15 cm handle to it. The shaft requires a tourque 8.5N m before it will turn. If she applies a force of 50 N to the end of the handle at an angle theta 30 degrees will the shaft turn?
Solution
torque applied is T = r*F*sin(theta)
given that
r = 15 cm = 0.15 m
F = 50 N
theta = 30 deg
then
T = r*F*sin(30) = 0.15*50*sin(30) = 3.75 N-m
but required torque was 8.5 N m
since 8.5 Nm > 3.75 Nm
so the shaft does not turn
