One month later, the center of mass of the reactive contaminant is located 5m from the well, and the center of mass of the non-reactive contaminant is located 25m from the well. If the aquifer porosity is 0.33 and the dry bulk density is 1,650kg/m2, estimate the retardation coefficient and the partition coefficient.

Solution

Calculation:

R = [1 + (pb/è)(Kd)]

pb (dry bulk density): 1650

è (porosity): 0.33

Kd (distribution coefficient): 25/5 = 5

R = [1 + (pb/è)(Kd)]

= [1 + (1652/0.33)(5)]

RETARDATION COEFFICIENT =1001
