1. A needle is inserted in the subarachnoid space in the lumbar spinous process of L4 i.e. the L3-L4 interface to obtain CSF. The needle is inserted just above or below the fourth lumbar vertebra as spinal cord will end a little below this region. The fourth vertebrae lie in line with the iliac crest, and are easily located.
