Chattel slavery; such slaves were traded and had no rights and they were supposed to provide labor and sexual favors to the masters at their command.

Forced labor; in such a situation slaves were coerced to work through the use of violence or intimidation.

Serfdom; the slaves were serfs or feudal laborers.

The race has been used to divide groups in American history and it was based cultural as well as physical traits. Colonization and the following enslavement of American Indians and Africans, and a common identity of the Europeans became the basis to divide groups in American history.
