To what extent was your team a true team?

In my opinion, our team partly fulfills the characteristics of a true team and we all together in a team find that there is still more room for improvement. This is because a good team must possess characteristics like clear plans, defined roles, effective communication and decision making, balanced participation, conflict management, cooperation, participative leadership, etc. In our ream, we still work out the ways for being everyone in a participative leadership role, manage our conflicts arising then and there, improve communication skills, etc.

The strengths of our healthcare team:

Our healthcare team exhibits the characteristics of strengths like a high level of trustworthiness among team members, mutual accountability, high level of independency and potential for lower rates of errors. While managing patients in our unit, we trust our colleagues very much because every one of our team knows that importance of serving patients and the risks and problems of not doing our work (nursing care) properly. We hold accountability to nursing care so that the quality of patient care being rendered will be great. We show lower rates of errors like reduced infection rates in our unit, fewer medication errors, etc. because we commit ourselves (every one of our team) to high-quality and safe nursing care.

With Table 2-3, Vulnerabilities of True Teams, as a guide, in what ways did your healthcare team exhibit vulnerabilities?

The vulnerabilities of our healthcare team:

As a growing team, we also find some of the risks that threaten our team structure and functions. The two important susceptibilities are poor leadership and inadequate conflict relationship strategies. We all have already identified these two areas of improvement and we are working together to ensure being everyone as a leader in a situational model role. At the same time, we are also finding ways to resolve the conflict arising between us by analysing the root cause of conflict and the possible ways of resolution. By constant learning and applying the principles, we believe that one day we will possess all the features of a true team.

2-- To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following quote from Chapter 3 (2 paragraphs)? Provide your rationale.

I entirely agree with the above-mentioned quote. As healthcare professionals, we must do our work effectively (i.e. to provide high-quality and evidence-based nursing care to patients). However, we are all interdependent upon one another (our colleagues during patient care) and we all need some extra support from others. For example, while shifting a patient, while changing a patient’s position, while dressing a bedsore wound at the back, we all need support from other nurses since a single person alone cannot do these activities. In a similar way, while administering a prescribed narcotic to a patient, cross-checking or double checking by another nurse is mandatory. Healthcare work has an interdependent role. Therefore, team members should cooperate and call on as and when required to contribute to safe and effective nursing care.

For effective coordination of patient care, members’ cooperation plays a crucial role. This requires learning the personality and other characteristics of team players. For instance, one nurse may voluntarily assist for care whereas another one may be moody. One nurse calculates the dosage of medications accurately whereas the other has a potential for errors. One staff may be very skilled to suction an intubated patient and clear his lungs while the other may have the modest skill. Therefore, as an effective healthcare worker, we must learn others’ characteristics and work behaviours so that patient-centered care is delivered effectively.
