a In the Olympics on average those who enter the final round
a) In the Olympics, on average, those who enter the final round of the 100 m (men) track event can run 100 m within 10 seconds. Some said that these men run faster than the car travelling at the speed of 40 km/h. Is this comment correct?
b) You are in the purchasing division, which is considering buying a new car. The prices of the cars A and B are almost identical. Other options are also almost the same. However, the fuel consumption rates are presented in different unit systems. Car A consumes fuel at the rate of 28 miles/gal, while the fuel consumption rate for the car B is 9 km/L. Which car should you recommend the company to purchase, and why?
c) The current prices of gasoline (ULG-95) in some countries are as follows: 3.361 U.S. dollars/U.S. gallon in California, USA,; 4,93 Danish Krones/Litre in Denmark; 384.0 Japanese Yens/U,S. gallon; and 32.49 Thai Bahts/L. Compare the price of each country in the unit of \'\'\'Euro/L\". Note that the current foreign exchange rates per U.S. dollar for Danish Krone, Japanese Yen, Thai Baht, and Euro are 5.09,111.72,33.81, and 0.706, respectively,
d) To lower the fuel cost used by an airplane, it is noted that if the velocity is cut from
525 mi/hr to 475 mi/hr this will lead to a cut in fuel consumption from 2,200 to 2,000 U.S. gallons/h. How many litre of fuel that can be saved for the distance of 1,500 km.
Solution
1. Speed of men = distance / Time
= 100m/10 sec
= 10 m/sec
Speed of Car =40 km/h
Convert the km/h in m/s for comparison
Speed of car in m/sec = 40*1000/ (60 * 60)
= 11.11 m/sec
On comparing two speed,it can be said that car travel faster than man. Thus, the comment is incorrect.
2. Assumption: gal in miles/gal is US liquid gallon
In this problem all the features of the cars A and B are same thus the only decisding factor is consumption rate, A car with low consumption rate is better for the company to buy.
Converting both the consumption rate in same unit i.e Km/L
1 mile/gal = 0.425144 km/l
28 miles/gal= 11.094 km/l
Consumption rate of car A =11.094 km/l
Consumption rate of car B = 9 km/l
Thus, the company should buy the car with lower fuel consumption rate i.e car B
4. Change in velocity= 50 mi/hr
Change in fuel consumption = 200 U.S. gallons/h
Fuel saved per mile = 200/50
= 4 U.S.gallon/miles
Converting km into miles
1km= 0.621371 miles
1500 km = 932 miles (approx.)
total fuel saved = total distance * fuel consumption per mile
= 932 * 4
=3728 U.S.gallon
Fuel saved in litre
1 U.S. gallon =3.78541 litres
3728 U.S.gallon =14112 Litres
Thus total fuel saved is 14112 litres
