Chapter 12 introduces simple linear regression. Linear regression is a statistical procedure that allows researchers to use an independent variable (IV) to predict values of a dependent variable (DV).

For example, we may be interested in looking at the salary that someone gets after being hired, and we might use the years of schoolings(IV) to predict the annual salary (DV).

For this week\'s posting, describe a regression relationship you think might exist. Be sure to describe the independent variable, dependent variable, and the type of relationship you think would exist (positive or negative)

Solution

we are interested in looking at the salary that someone gets after being hired, and we use the years of schoolings(IV) to predict the annual salary (DV).

so here the independent variable is years of schooling

the dependent variable is annual salary.

let X be the variable denoting the years of schooling and Y be the variable denoting the annual salary.

so here X is the independent variable and Y is the dependent variable.

so here our aim is to predict the values of Y using X.

now X denote the years of schooling. now X increases means years of schooling increases which means that the person is getting more educated. hence it is obvious that he/she would get a better job, which implies that his/her salary would also increase that is Y also increases.

so as X increases Y also increases. hence there should be a positive relationship between X and Y.
