Find the vertices and locate the foci for the hyperbola whos

Find the vertices and locate the foci for the hyperbola whose equation is given. y = plusminus squareroot x^2 - 12

Solution

y = +/- sqrt(x^2 -12)

squaring both sides:

y^2 = x^2 -12

x^2 -y^2 = 12

x^2/12 - y^2/12 =1

vertices (0. 0)

a^2 = 12 ----> a = 2sqrt(3) ; b = 2sqrt(3)

c^2 = a^2 +b^2 = 24

c = 2sqrt(6)

Foci = ( 2sqrt(6) , 0) and ( -2sqrt(6) , 0)
