Describe and illustrate by example, any differences and similarities between percentage, proportion and classical probability.
Solution
A proportion refers to the fraction of the total that possesses a certain attribute.
Suppose there are 6 males and 4 females, then proportion of males = 6/10=0.6
A percentage is another way of expressing a proportion . A percentage is equal to the proportion times 100.
percentage means a given percentage of a total percentage ( it is from 0 to 100 and total percentage is 100).
Percentage of males = proportion *100 = 0.6*100 = 60
A probability is an expected proportion. The long-run proportion of an event is its probability.
Classical probability is the frequency of an event occurs divided by total number of possible outcomes. This can only be used when all events are equally likely.
Proportion and probability, both are calculated from the total but the value of proportion is certain while that of probability is not certain.
