Water is essential to all living organisms. Discuss THREE properties of water. Explain each of the following in terms of the properties of water. You are not limited to the three properties discussed in part (a): The role of water as a medium for the metabolic processes of cells The ability of water to moderate temperature within living organisms and in organisms\' environments The movement of water from the roots to the leaves of plants

Solution

Solution:
(A)Water is necessary for all living organisms.
Three properties of water are given as-
1)Water have the property of adhesion and cohesion. It is adhesive force which push the water toward other molecules.Due to cohesion water molecules attracted to each others.
2)Surface tension is another important property of water.Cohesive force give rise to surface tension.

3) Water have another property known as polarity.Due to polar nature of water many polar molecules easily dissolved in it.

(B)
(i)Role of water as a medium for the metabolic processes of the cell- water is used in both the anabolism and catabolism of metabolic process.Water involved in various food processing mechanism like photosynthesis.

(ii)Due to its high specific heat capacity water can moderate temperature within living organisms.Various reaction occurs in cells need various different range of temperature.

(iii)Movement of water through roots to the leaves is a very crucial process for plants.Cohesive and adhesive force take part in it and due to this water reached to the leaves and there it is used in process of photosynthesis.
