Your uncle is using an older Windows XP computer and has just bought a new USB 2.0 mouse. He’s not sure he should plug it into his computer, because he’s fairly sure the PC is using USB 1.1. What do you tell him to do?
A. Plug in the mouse. It will work but at the USB 1.1 data rate.
B. Plug in the mouse. It will work and at the USB 2.0 data rate.
C. He can plug the mouse in, but it won’t work.
D. Don’t plug in the mouse. It will cause the computer to fail to boot.
Solution
Answer is....
A.Plug in the mouse. It will work but at the USB 1.1 data rate.
(Some of the older computers have both 1.1 and 2.0 USB ports. The one exception to this scenario is a machine with USB 1.1 ports that has a USB 2.0 expansion card added. In this case I know of no way to tell which is which, other than simply knowing you added a USB 2.0 card to a machine with built-in 1.1 ports. Obviously in a case like this, the built-in ports are 1.1, and the added expansion card ports are 2.0.)
